Anatomy trainer and movement teacher
Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Matt was studying biology at university when he enrolled in a dance class upon the whimsical suggestion of a friend. Something changed in him during that first dance course: he discovered the joy of movement. He next enrolled in a yoga class and decided he wanted to study movement instead of biology.
Several years later, he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Dance from California State University Long Beach, a yoga teacher training at a Sivananda ashram in India, a Foundation Course with YogaFit, a Pilates Matwork Certification with Power Pilates and a Thai Yoga Massage Foundation Course with the Sunshine Network. Through his many years of dance training, he also studied and explored Contact Improvisation, Body-Mind Centering, Laban Movement Analysis and Bartenieff Fundamentals.
Matt has been teaching yoga since 2005 and is registered as a Senior Teacher with Yoga Alliance Professionals. He has lived in the UK since 2009 and currently teaches weekly classes in Buckinghamshire as well as leading the anatomy component of several teacher trainings, both nationally and internationally. His yoga classes are dynamic, challenging and un-rushed, with an emphasis on empowering the student to follow the guidance of their own body. He gives attention to alignment while presenting the principles of yoga in a simple, down-to-earth way. He also offers CPD workshops to current teachers and mentoring to newer teachers.
In his anatomy studies, he has been lucky enough to study with Karen Clippinger, co-author of Pilates Anatomy, and he has worked closely with Andrew McGonigle (DoctorYogi). Matt and Andrew are currently writing a book looking at the evidence-based effects of yoga, due out in 2021 by Human Kinetics. Matt is also currently enjoying his studies toward a MSc in Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences at Brunel University, London.
Having formerly danced professionally, Matt still has a strong yoga and movement practice which informs his teaching.
Matt is a proud father of two.
